The IIT-JEE results, when analyzed throw out some very interesting statistics and some of them, a complete surprise. A study was conducted on these numbers by IIT Kharagpur and it came out with some very good insights.

The most telling was Jaipur, which topped the list with maximum number of candidates coming from this city of Rajasthan. And then came Delhi, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Patna and Mumbai. These six cities together accounted for 40% of the total students in India who qualified for the IIT.

This year, some  1,26,995 candidates registered of which 1,19,581 appeared in both papers and 27,152 candidates qualified JEE (Advanced) 2014. This shows how IIT continues to remain the most sought after degree in India; a passport to success in life.

This year, JEE (Advanced) 2014 was conducted under seven zonal IITs, in 98 cities and one centre in Dubai. Following six cities, the rest qualified from Pune, Visakhapatnam, Indore, Kolkata and Lucknow. These 11 cities accounted for 14,269 or 52.55% of the qualified candidates. And why these 11? Because these 11 cities have some of the best coaching facilities in India, with Jaipur clearly having the best. And last year too, it was Jaipur which topped the list and the same 11 cities accounted for over 50% of those qualifying for IIT.

The study also shows that cities topped the list with small towns and cities not faring too well. Gangtok had no candidate qualifying though 20 had registered while one qualified each from Itanagar and Port Blair. Other cities which came at the bottom of the list were Shillong (5), Imphal (7), Silchar (nine), Agartala (18), Malda (19), Palampur (20), Panaji (26), Jorhat (27), Shimla (32), Katihar (34) and Kharagpur (34).

And in terms of state-wise tally, Andhra Pradesh topped the list with 18.32% success, followed by Rajasthan at 15.81% and UP at 12.21%.
