The Japanese are sad; mourning the demise of their famous, loved one. And before you Google, to try and find out what it is, be warned, its not an individual, its not even an animal; it’s a snack made of Potatoes, to be precise!

The 25 year old Japanese cracker was a local delicacy and had flavors of deep-fried wonton, fried chicken, octopus, pizza, pudding, corn dogs and salami.  Do a YouTube and you can see scores of video eulogies, staging farewell parties, mock funerals amongst other weird atrocities for the snack. Despite its immense popularity, the demand for the snack had gone down in the past two decades, this combined with sluggish sales and falling prices had to bring an end to the flavored potato delicacy. It was announced in May that Potato Snack is going out of production and since then, loyal fans have been rushing to stores, buying and hoarding the last lot of their snack and even auctions have been conducted, selling a packet to the highest bidder.

While there is always Potato Fry, a snack similar to Potato Snack, its fans are inconsolable. Its like our childhood’s pepsicola - cheap and inexpensive, but now that it is out of sales, it remains just an integral part of our childhood memory. Well, the Potato Snacks is the same for some Japanese fans.
