If you were never really interested in your mothers and grandmothers old clothes, after all, with the variety available today, there is indeed truth in the idiom, 'old is gold'! Thanks to the rising costs, old zari saris might as well be a hidden, neglected treasure!

With gold prices rising and silver rates up by 133% in the past three years, textile owners, jewelers and agents are paying big money to collect silk saris and brocades in any condition. The gold and silver woven into these saris make them priceless! The demand for old saris, especially the one woven 40-50 years ago have gone up in the past one year. Old silk sarees with gold and silver content are bought by textile owners and jewelers for anywhere between Rs.2000-10000 based on the quality of the zari. Zari, after all, is nothing but sprayed gold over intertwined silk threads and gold or silver wires. Today these same saris cost above Rs.50000!

Many textile shops, especially in South India, have ‘old silk for new silk’ exchange plans. True, the cost earned via exchange can never buy you a new zari silk sari. However, if you want to earn quick money for old and jaded saris and update your wardrobe, it’s time to dig in to your family heirloom wardrobe!
