When the internet you are using crawls or breaks down often, you curse the service provider and wonder when India will ever improve! And rightly so. A recent survey done by a US cloud company listed down countries where internet speed is the fastest and most reliable.

Its study found that the global average connectivity speed today stands at 6.3 Mbps. And in terms of rankings, South Korea is the best in the world with 26.3 Mbps. Second place is held by Hong Kong, followed by Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

Apart from efforts put in by their respective Governments to speed up penetration of internet access, the one common thread running through the toppers is urbanization. Where majority of the population lives in cities, there internet connectivity is excellent  and efficient. Places like Hong Kong and Singapore also place highly when it comes to top internet speeds in the world, largely because they have a 100% urban population. USA does not come in the top 10 because of its suburban sprawls.

India ranks 107th  with Q3 (31st Dec year ending) peak Mbps at 27, with a 3.2% sequential gain and 45% YoY jump. In India, 30% of the population is stated to get a speed above 4 Mbps compared to 87% of Sri Lanka, 69% of Indonesia and China’s 67%. Above 10 Mpbs, only 6.6% of the population gets, which is still a wonder!
