The falling standard of teaching

It was shocking to read that 88% of the professors at IIT-Bombay (IIT-B) were inept, not motivating the students to study. The students of IIT-B have always been uphappy about the institute getting a lower ranking when compared to the others though they say they do work hard. And to get to the root of this problem, its in-house student magazine conducted a survey within the campus.

The survey has been conducted in two parts, with the first part being published in Jan and that one revealed that if not on a deadline, 75% of the students do not spend time studying and more than 75% students preferred pursuing their hobbies than study. The second part is about the quality of teaching and learning material at the campus. 72% students responded saying that the learning material was theoretical, with no practical application.

IIT-B is said to be facing a shortage of faculty staff. This is unfortunately not unique to this campus alone and is seen as a big issue in most of the colleges too. What this means is that less and less number of people are opting for teaching profession and even those who opt, do so because of lack of other alternatives in their career and this affecting the quality of professors. The need of the hour is to establish an IIT or IIM like top-notch institute to groom world class professors; maybe that will attract more to this noble profession. And yes, if salaries get better and are also paid on time, maybe more professors would come rather than teach only at their tuition or coaching classes.
