The responsibility of a fly!

If you thought being a fly had no responsibilities, think again! Especially if the fly is from Satkarshtal village, in Khed Taluka, Maharashtra. Being a fly there is tough as one day, it could be called upon to elect the sarpanch and deputy Sarpanch or the chief of the village.

To avoid human interference and bring in complete transparency in the sarpanch and deputy sarpanch election process, instead of depending on computers – the village has come out with a unique way to choose the head of the village. The name of the interested candidates is written on chits of paper and then it is laid down on the ground. People then sit around the chits, waiting for a fly to come by – the chit on which a fly sits is then chosen as the deputy sarpanch and the same process for the sarpanch too.

In today’s complex era, we can laugh at this simple way of election but sometimes, the best comes out from simplicity only. Surely we cannot follow this for national level leaders but one wonders whether the aspirants need to qualify certain criterion before putting their names on the chit? Or else, can a fly decide the fate of the village by electing a chief who is not worthy at all?
