Trouble brewing for beer?

Did you know that Aurangabad in Maharashtra is the ‘beer’ king? Well, when brands like Kingfisher, Foster’s, Carlsberg and Heineken have their breweries at the Walunj industrial estate in Aurangabad and when together brew about 180 million litres of beer /year which is around 70% of Maharashtra’s total brewing capacity, , naturally, it has to be. But apparently there is trouble brewing for the beer lovers.

All these breweries source their water from the nearby Jayakwadi dam. As per Maharashtra state water resources department, the dam currently holds only 2% of usable water. An acute deficiency of rain has run this dam now barrels dry.  For drinking water, if the dry spell persists, water could be released from the Nilvande dam, which is upstream to Jayakwadi dam, but these beer factories and other industries might have to wait it out.

This water shortage might force companies to shut production but it might not affect beer supply through rest of India though could affect supply in Maharashtra. Good news for those who do not like liquor but surely sobering times for beer lovers!
