The coolest fridge ever!

“Nanma Maram”. These Malayalam words mean the Tree of Goodness. And this is a fantastic venture which probably every nook and nukkad of our cities should have.

This unique concept is at work at a busy street corner in Kochi, Kerala. A restaurant chain, Pappadavada, has installed a community refrigerator under a Konna tree (Cassia Fistula), right in front of the restaurant. The logic is that anyone can leave leftover food in this refrigerator and anyone hungry, can come and eat the food.

Apart from individuals, it has urged party makers, event managers and restaurant owners to deposit left over, but fresh and eatable food, neatly packed in this refrigerator.  The restaurant itself places place 50 food packets everyday in the refrigerator. The needy can help themselves by taking the food they need.

Now this is what we call a very novel concept, easy to implement and could change so many lives. We ourselves, instead of throwing away the old fridge can place it at a junction where people could be urged to place edible leftover food. This not only helps prevent wastage but the food goes to those who need the most. It could become our good deed for the day.
