Bharat Coking Coal down 5%

Bharat Coking Coal shares were under pressure today, with the stock down 4.8% to Rs.34.14, after opening weaker at Rs.34.55 versus the previous close of Rs.35.86. The counter traded in a Rs.33.92–35.09 band with VWAP around Rs.34.46, reflecting broad-based selling rather than a single large print reaction.

The immediate trigger is a soft Q4FY26 outcome: net profit fell 59% YoY to Rs.27 crore, revenue from operations declined 15% to Rs.3,283 crore, and EBITDA swung to a loss of Rs.335 crore versus an EBITDA profit of Rs.62 crore a year ago. Volumes were a key drag, offtake dropped to 7.22 MT from 9.88 MT in Q4FY25, highlighting how quickly earnings can de-rate when dispatches soften in a largely fixed-cost mining set-up.

The bigger sting for sentiment is the “quality” of the quarter: profitability didn’t just moderate, it flipped, and the stripping activity adjustment moved to a debit (Rs.80.4 crore) versus a large credit (Rs.393 crore) last year. Even if part of the swing is accounting/period-end adjustment driven, the market typically treats it as visibility risk, when reported operating performance becomes volatile, investors demand a higher margin of safety and the stock reacts sharply, especially for newly-listed PSU subsidiaries where price discovery is still settling.

Management’s post-result actions, revising washed coking coal prices for Q1FY27 (effective April 1), moving towards an import-parity pricing mechanism, and raising evacuation charges, signal an attempt to restore realisations and protect unit economics. However, that also sets up the near-term push-pull: better pricing can support margins, but at a time when steel demand and customer procurement choices matter, any aggressive pass-through can keep offtake under watch.

For the stock, the next re-rating point is simple: evidence that volumes stabilise and EBITDA normalises (with fewer one-off adjustment swings), otherwise the market will keep treating the earnings line as “unreliable” despite pricing resets.
