HCL Tech pushes up IT index

Indian IT stocks rallied sharply today, with the Nifty IT index gaining over 3% after strong HCLTech earnings revived buying interest in the sector. On the BSE gainer list, Birlasoft rose 6.25% to Rs. 290.75, HCLTech gained 5.55% to Rs. 1,287.65, Firstsource Solutions rose 5.50% to Rs. 292.60, while TCS was up 5.14% at Rs. 2,236.30.

Trigger

  • HCLTech’s Q2 results were better than expected, with revenue growth and margin improvement.
  • HCLTech’s EBIT margin expanded to 18.2%, up 131 bps sequentially and 71 bps YoY.
  • Reuters reported that Nifty IT rose 3.4%, with HCLTech and TCS gaining over 5%, as investors revisited beaten-down IT stocks.
  • The sector had already been under pressure, with Nifty IT down around 23% year-to-date before today’s rebound.
  • Global AI-linked technology stocks saw selling pressure on concerns over stretched AI valuations and heavy capex, making traditional IT services look relatively safer for the day.

The rally is not because Indian IT has suddenly become a pure AI winner. It is more of a relief rally in a beaten-down sector. HCLTech’s results showed that large IT companies can still deliver margin improvement and steady execution, even when global tech spending is cautious.

The AI angle is interesting. Global AI stocks are under pressure because investors are questioning whether huge AI spending will generate enough returns. That helps Indian IT sentiment in two ways: first, it reduces the “AI will destroy IT services immediately” fear; second, it reminds investors that enterprises will still need implementation partners for cloud, data, AI governance, cybersecurity and process automation.

TCS also gained because investors are reading the sector more positively after its recent results and deal wins. For mid-tier names like Birlasoft and Firstsource, the move is largely sector-led,  when the Nifty IT mood improves, these stocks tend to move faster because of lower base and higher beta.

The caution is that this is still not a full sector turnaround signal. So today’s move is best read as strong HCLTech earnings + beaten-down IT valuations + relief from global AI froth, rather than a complete change in the long-term IT outlook.
