Bandhan shows "strategic" rise
Bandhan Bank is currently the top gainer on the BSE. The stock opened at Rs. 161.80 against its previous close of Rs. 157.35 and touched an intraday high of Rs. 171.55. Trading activity was strong, with 12.30 lakh shares changing hands and turnover at Rs. 20.72 crore.
Trigger
- Abu Dhabi-based International Holding Company and First Abu Dhabi Bank are reportedly in early talks to buy into Bandhan Financial Services.
- Bandhan Financial Services is the parent of Bandhan Financial Holdings, which is the direct promoter of Bandhan Bank.
- Bandhan Financial Holdings held 37.53% in Bandhan Bank as of June 2026.
- Promoter holding has already reduced from 38.86% in March 2026 and 39.07% in December 2025.
- Under RBI norms, promoter stake must come down to 26% by 2030.
- GIC and IFC together hold about 30.3% in Bandhan Financial Services and are reportedly looking for an exit.
The market is reacting because this is not just a normal stake-sale rumour. Bandhan Bank has a known promoter shareholding overhang. The promoter still owns around 37.5% in the bank, while RBI norms require this to fall to 26% by 2030. Any strategic investor coming into Bandhan Financial Services could help clean up the promoter structure, provide an exit to early investors, and create a smoother path for future stake reduction.
The current shareholding pattern makes the issue clearer. Bandhan Financial Holdings is the direct promoter with 37.53% stake in the bank. DIIs held 7.91%, mutual funds 19.65%, FIIs 18.64%, and others 16.26% as of June 2026. Among public shareholders, SBI Balanced Advantage Fund held 5.49% and LIC held 3.69%.
So today’s rally is a promoter-restructuring and ownership-clean-up trade. The stock is not moving because of an immediate earnings upgrade. It is moving because the market sees the possibility of a stronger strategic investor entering the promoter chain, while also helping Bandhan move closer to RBI’s shareholding norms.
