Mahindra did earn the distinction of being the first in the country to launch the electric vehicle (EV) – E20 Plus, which has a top speed of 50 miles per hour and with a single charge can run upto 87 miles.

But it now has some serious competition. The second largest car seller in India after Maruti, Hyundai has launched a super powerful EV – Kona Electric.

This battery powered SUV will rev up from 0 to 100 kms per hour in 9.7 seconds and travel 452 kms on a single charge – this does leave E20 Plus way far behind.

The cost? Rs.25 lakh. And the good part – the company will itself help buyers install charging infra in their homes. Simultaneously, the company is working with Indian Oil Corp to install a network of fast chargers at gas stations in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. They are capable of charging the vehicle up to 80% in 57 minutes.

Wow. It does look like slowly but surely EVs are making a splash in India and given the way the Govt is going all out to promote EVs so that we or our children can breathe cleaner air in the future, this launch is sure to make the other manufacturers tighten their seat belts and get set to go on this EV road.
