Companies get responsible

BMC could not do it. People don’t do it. The city of Mumbai is getting dirtier by the day and to reducing this pile up, MNCs like Dabur and HUL have partnered with none other than the rag pickers.

HUL is creating a market value for discarded sachets and packets by offering  rag pickers an incentive to collect them from the streets. HUL has also partnered with a Chennai based company to convert plastic waste into fuel oil.  Currently, rag pickers have helped the city be clean of bottles and cans but the plastic, has been largely ignored as they don’t fetch any money. Now, these ‘sources of pollution’ will be collected by rag pickers. Dabur too has an arrangement for door to door collection of waste. Till now, over a lakh of rag pickers have helped the city clear of the 8000 tonnes of waste that are generated daily. Even the Municipal Corporation is unable to manage such volumes of junk!

The companies are getting increasingly environmentally conscious, each doing their bit to reduce the piled junk in the country, encouraging recycling of all goods and materials. Way to go! Hope other companies too do thier bit to make the country cleaner and better.
