Stocks rise as crude falls

Indian equity markets staged a sharp rally today, with the Sensex gaining nearly 1,500 points and the Nifty rising close to 2%, as Brent crude fell to around $93.50 per barrel. Expectations of easing US-Iran tensions following the US midterm elections lifted market sentiment, with aviation, tyre, paint and oil marketing companies emerging as major beneficiaries of lower crude prices.

Trigger

  • Crude oil: Brent plunged below $100 per barrel, falling nearly 9% in the previous session, easing concerns over energy costs and inflation.
  • Tyre stocks: JK Tyre surged 5.60% to Rs. 351.50, Apollo Tyres gained 4.37% to Rs. 420, while CEAT advanced 3.25% to Rs. 3,526.
  • Aviation: IndiGo jumped 5.04% to Rs. 5,400, benefiting from expectations of lower aviation turbine fuel costs.
  • Oil marketing companies: HPCL rose 5.17% to Rs. 385.30, BPCL gained 3.63% to Rs. 315.75 and Indian Oil advanced 3.10% to Rs. 146.43.
  • Paint stocks: Asian Paints rallied 4.44% to Rs. 2,525.70, Kansai Nerolac gained 2.84% to Rs. 200.86 and Berger Paints rose 2.75% to Rs. 498.45.
  • Upstream oil companies declined: Oil India fell 3.07% to Rs. 443.95, while ONGC slipped 1.60% to Rs. 231.24, as lower crude prices could reduce oil realisations.

Aviation companies are among the most direct beneficiaries, as aviation turbine fuel represents a substantial portion of operating costs. Tyre manufacturers could benefit from lower prices of synthetic rubber and carbon black, while paint companies could see reduced costs of petroleum-derived chemicals and solvents. These benefits generally materialise with a lag.

For oil marketing companies such as HPCL, BPCL and Indian Oil, lower crude prices can improve marketing margins if retail fuel prices remain unchanged. In contrast, upstream oil producers face pressure on profitability as crude realisations decline.

The broader benefit for India is significant, as lower crude prices can reduce the import bill, ease inflationary pressures and support the rupee. However, the sustainability of the rally will depend on whether the fall in crude is sustained, particularly as geopolitical developments in West Asia remain uncertain.
