IIP AND CPI - A PLEASANT SURPRISE ON GROWTH FRONT

Vegetable inflation

IIP, CPI AND TCS... ALL DISAPPOINT

It was a bad set of numbers - both IIP for November as well as CPI for December. And then to top it all off, TCS announced its Q3FY16 numbers and they were much, much below analyst expectations. The same cheer was expected to continue as long as the IIP and CPI data came in the positive. But that did not happen. Despite onion prices coming down, prices of meat and fish going up by 10.5% led to the CPI for Jan coming in at a shocker – 7.5%, which is much more than what most had expected.

IIP AND CPI TO BRING IN CHEER AND BELATED FESTIVITY!

Well, the market is going to surely like this November IIP of 3.8% and December CPI came in at 5%. Both the numbers are extremely good, much better than many estimates and most certainly better than numbers of previous months. The bounce back in the November IIP was led by mainly by the manufacturing sector due to increase in production to restock inventories, which in all probability were depleted

AUGUST IIP - VERY UNCOMFORTABLE NUMBERS

The optimism seen in Q1 seems to be waning. This IIP number for August is pretty ugly at 0.4% v/s 0.5% in July, the culprits being manufacturing and consumer durables. Basic good is the only one which has posted a decent growth; indicating that probably construction and real estate are the only activities happening.

SHOCKER OF AN IIP NUMBER FOR JUNE'14

After the pleasant surprise of 4.7% in May, it was a shocker today to see June IIP come in at 3.4%. The markets were expecting it to come at over 5%, enthused by May numbers but clearly, the market expectations were driven more by sentiments. The markets closed today

JULY IIP - FLASH IN THE PAN?

Manufacturing which has a 80% weightage in the IIP number did well with a growth of 3% but Capital Goods, showing a growth of 15.6% v/s degrowth of 6.6% in June was too volatile and cannot really be taken as an indicator of any improvement. Most analysts do not take into consideration capital goods at all as it simply

JUNE IIP - DEGROWTH, DISAPPOINTING, DISTURBING

How do we get corporate confidence up? That has to be the biggest question and not whether or not RBI will reduce or increase rates. RBI has been doing its job very well, with absolute diligence but the laggard causing this failure is obviously the Govt. Very real supply constraints have developed like in infra, mainly land acquisitions

RUPEE REMAINS THE 'FALLING' STAR OF THE DAY!

The Rupee remained the star, for the second day in a row. It hit a new low today against the US$ at Rs.58.98 and for now, it seems to have recouped a bit but one never really knows at this juncture. RBI is said to have intervened and that helped cull the one way downfall.

BUDGET FY14 - THE GAINERS AND LOSERS

On the whole the Budget was a lot of talk but there does not seem to be the right stride in the walk to meet this talk. The Finance Minister on one hand said that the FY14 plan expenditure is to be raised by 30% but at the same time, he says that fiscal deficit for FY14 will come down to 4.8% from the current year estimate of 5.2%. How does this math add up? There is a massive jump in social schemes, so one wonders how the fiscal deficit

NOV IIP -LIGHTS OUT AFTER OCT BRIGHTNESS
