A BUMPER IIP AND SOBERING CPI

October was the month of Diwali and the trickle effect of this was expected but an IIP of 8.4% v/s 2.2% (MoM) for November surely blew everyone off! A 25-month high! Looks like all the pent up demand after demonetization and GST broke the dam, leading to this super-duper growth number.

INFLATION SOARS AND GROWTH FALLS

The sharp rise in inflation was led mainly by food inflation and that was not really a surprise given the way we all have paid for vegetables and fruits in Nov. Cleary it was tomatoes and onions were the ones which led to this surge. Though the prices of these vegetables have come down since the past month

SEPT IIP – MANUFACTURING IS THE SILVER LINING

The IIP for Sept’17 came in at 3.8% much below what most had expected, especially given the fact that this was expected to be a good month, given the stocking that would have happened for the festive season. The heartening fact to note here is that manufacturing has picked up and so has capital goods.

JUNE IIP – GST LEAVES A TELLING EFFECT

Almost like a precursor to the IIP data for June, the Economic Survey Volume II, which was tabled during the day in the Parliament today, probably for the first time, held a pessimistic view on growth forecast. It has taken into account a downward risk emerging to the earlier estimated GDP growth of 6.75% to 7.50% for FY18.

GROWTH SLOWS AND RETAIL INFLATION FALLS

Retail inflation for June’17 was down to 1.54% while IIP for May’17 fell to 1.7% v/s 2.8% (MoM). Sp growth is down and inflation is also down. We in India celebrate every time we see a lower inflation rate while the developed countries are working towards increasing inflation. So are we missing a point here? That’s the thought which comes to mind with MoM lower inflation.

We have many investors/traders posting us queries on the website, asking for some penny stock ideas. The only question which comes to mind is “why?” This search for the elusive pot of gold at the end of the brilliant rainbow is what puts traders at risk. And this is a dangerous time to be on the hunt for penny stocks and it is actually the perfect time to stand back and look at where and what we are investing in. Wait for the dust to settle before you take a call on large cap stocks too!

UNION BUDGET FY15 - GAINERS & LOSERS

For most part of the Budget, it sounded almost like a Congress Budget, except that the speech was longer, Mr.Arun Jaitley took a five minute break and there were so many micro issues in the Budget that one minister was actually caught on TV with a huge yawn! It would be really unfair for us to expect this 6 week old Govt to announce huge Big Bang measures in this Budget. Yet, in the short span of time, the Govt did announce a lot of sops.

AS MIDCAPS BECOME EXPENSIVE, STAY AWAY FROM PENNY STOCKS

We are currently in a situation, at least most of the retail investors, where we can only watch the bull run and quality stocks hitting new highs. Two factors deter our getting in - most of the good stocks, even mediocre stocks are at unaffordable prices and secondly, the high prices could mean lesser profits on the table. Thus there is now a pursuit for penny stocks.
