100 YEARS AND MORE - OLD IS INDEED GOLD

It is a wonder how some companies have lived over 100 years and despite the fast changing times have adapted or are learning to adapt. All these companies continue to enjoy immense investor faith and have built a brand equity which symbolizes India. They have responded to changes and that is their secret for survival.

WHAT IS THE "NEW NORMAL?"

Yes, we have learnt a few lessons and continue learning but whether we will stick to it once corona goes? Now that extremely debatable. And are we going to revamp and modernise our health care? Till date there has been no talk about this; so yeah, we don't know what lessons will be learnt.

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

2020 has taught us many life lessons and one more important learning – its impossible to predict the entire next year when we cannot predict the next second in our lives. Yet, we as humans need to have a roadmap, something which chalks our path and gives a rough idea about what to expect in the coming days.

BSE - BEING THE POLICE ALL DISLIKE

There were hundreds of calls, yesterday and today too, asking us whether the bottom was falling off the markets? The falling of mid and small cap stocks has become the all-encompassing ‘market’. These are the stocks that today represent the market and not the old bastion large caps – that’s one big learning from the tumbling stocks.

BABAs TRANSFORMING INTO CEOs - BLURRING THE SPIRITUAL LINE

What does this mean to you and me? In an ideal world, in which probably our parents lived, a spiritual guru was one who guided us onto the path of knowledge, wisdom and helped us find the purpose of life. His teachings were more about delving into oneself and cleansing one from all the "mayajaals" of life. He preached a life of detachment - it did not mean living away from the loved ones but learning to live a balanced life like a mountain on the shores

MARKETS – TIME TO UNLEARN TO RELEARN

It’s a Black Friday celebration for the retailers but looks like it has turned into a Red Friday for the markets, with a Black mood dominating the sentiments. News of a new more virulent and fast mutating virus has spooked the market. All the usual suspects are down – hotels, aviation, theaters, all outdoor companies – all are in the red. And on the other hand, pharma, diagnostic, hospital and wellness companies are back in the green

FALLING MARKETS - WORRIED?

Listless with a downward bias – that, in short is how the market is today. The blame is fair and square on the new Omicron virus – as its infection spreads, so does the panic. The fear of lockdown and restrictions are so high that any news on virus causes a lot of anxiety. Well, there will be restrictions if the virus spreads but lockdown, nope.

Now the weekend is upon us and given the up and down week on the markets, some ‘light’ reading will do us all good. So cut off from the profits and losses of the markets and business world, and today, we take a look at all things which have become irrelevant. Many of those belonging to the new generation might have no clue what we are talking about!

CAUTION - OPERATORS AT WORK

What we have seen time and again is that when you start getting random “tips” from “market friends” and “hot stocks” get forwarded on Whatsapp (earlier it was SMS), its most certainly a time to get extremely cautious. Such tips have always been deadly. Like recently, one stock which has been doing the rounds vigorously is of RattanIndia Power. There were major forwards from many...

CAN WE GO CONTRARIAN ?

But instead of trying to add on to the misery, we decided to take a look at some countries where life is slowly limping back to some normalcy. And in these countries, we are trying to see where demand is at its peak, maybe more than pre-covid levels – that will give us an inference as to what to expect when things better- they always get better; darkness cannot remain forever.

BUFFETT'S LETTER - LIFE LESSONS

This is the time of the year when Buffett pens his famous letter (via email) to the shareholders of Berkshire. Always pretty long, this time 19-pages, it’s a nugget of wisdom. Its not about where he is investing or how much money he made; its about getting a perspective into his way of thinking and in our small way, try to build in some of the character that he has.

SUEZ - AA SU CHE?

AS FACTORIES WORK – LIVES OR PRODUCTION?

OVER 100 YEARS OLD, STILL ALIVE AND KICKING!

There are a few handful companies which are historic in the sense, they have witnessed two world wars, seen the various revolutions, the Great Depression, India's freedom struggle, liberalization and evolution of mankind from mechanics to now electronics and digitization. FLOODS IN CHENNAI - ANOTHER WAKE UP CALL

People swimming through streets. Men and women harried due to rains, no drinking water and power. Rats scurrying away. Submerged runways at airports. Cars and other vehicles submerged. MISSING DIVESTMENT TARGET – KEEPING THE TRADITION ALIVE!

It’s like a track record. The Govt just cannot seem to get divestment target ever right and this is a historic occurrence; not just about this Govt or the previous. Somehow, we simply do not know to set the right number – it is always much, much more than what is actually achieved. In the 25 years of divestment, the Govt has exceeded its target only four times – 1994, 1998, 2003 and 2004.

THE RISE OF GODMEN – WHEN REASON LOSES ALL LOGIC

Godmen/women are today worth millions and they come across more as business magnets and hungry for limelight rather than even remotely interested in anything spiritual. The fact that business and spirituality is being mixed, with the business cashing in on the brand image created by spirituality, it makes wonder about the true purpose of these Godmen.

THE RIGHT EDUCATION IS NOT ABOUT RANKING'S

Most of our rankings come in much later – IISc was in 251-300 category and the IITs come in much lower but we are happy that they are among the top 1000 in the world. Many are perturbed that we get ranked so poorly, even the crème de la crème of India’s education – the IITs that we are so proud of. But the question is – should it worry us at all?
