Better late than never

We all are familiar with the joke of the now defunct telegram, informing about your relatives arrival, after he has come in long time ago and settled down. Moving at snail’s pace is something that almost all Govt offices are famous for. And reiterating this fact further is this bizarre story of a man in Tamil Nadu, who got a job as an Assistant Engineer, 22 years after he got himself registered with the employment exchange, six years before he is scheduled to retire.

L.Rajagopal after graduating from Tirunelveli Government Engineering College in the 1980s registered with the employment office, in 1992. He was given his appointment order for the post of assistant engineer in the Chennai Corporation about 10 days ago. He is the oldest among the 81 assistant engineers selected by the Corporation recently. The youngest engineer is 21 years.

Mr.Rajagopal does not have any complaints with the late news. He feels it is better late than never. After having spent his entire lifetime working in the private sector, he is elated to have at least six years working for a PSU. It is his ‘dream’ and he is surely amongst the fortunate few whose got a positive response from the employment exchange. So with Govt machinery we can be say one thing – it might come late, very late but it is sure to come!
