Stray dogs of Chile

Did you think that only India has a problem of stray dogs, hounding you everywhere that you go? Think again. Stray dogs are a big issue in Chile too.  We in India do even have a  ballpark figure of how many stray dogs there would be abound but Chile has an estimate - some 180,000 stray hounds wandering the city of six million people; some 80,000 more are let out by their owners to roam as they please. Their favourite hangout? The Presidential palace area.

Naturally, the President is perturbed as he made a mention of them recently in the Parliamen, announcing that  a national sterilisation programme for stray dogs would be out soon.  The President is also bringing about a Bill, on responsible pet ownership where tougher penalties will be issued on those who abuse or abandon their pets. They are also planning to have a registration of ‘dangerous dogs’. Wonder how they would do that? Maybe name the stray dogs, “Mad Tommy”, “Chewy Moti” and so on?

The President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet also ruled out culling stray dogs and that means the dogs can rest in peace for some more time on the cool and green lawns of Bachelet’s palace. Expecting any action against stray dogs in India; now that would be really pushing to too far as far as expectations go.
