Jio makes strong debut
Probably one of the most awaited listings, Jio Platforms, made a strong stock market debut today, October 28, 2026, listing at Rs. 1,358 on the BSE against its IPO price of Rs. 1,119, a premium of 21.36%.
The stock touched an intraday high of Rs. 1,375 before trading at Rs. 1,358, giving IPO investors a notional listing gain of Rs. 239 per share. Trading was brisk, with 98.14 lakh shares changing hands and turnover of Rs. 1,333.52 crore. At the quoted price, Jio Platforms commanded a market capitalisation of approximately Rs. 12.50 lakh crore, making it India's second-largest listed company.
Trigger
- India's largest-ever IPO, raising Rs. 30,213 crore through a fresh issue.
- IPO price: Rs. 1,119; BSE listing price: Rs. 1,358, a 21.36% premium.
- Intraday high: Rs. 1,375, or 22.88% above the issue price.
- Overall subscription: 22.19 times.
- QIB subscription: 70.55 times.
- HNI subscription: 14 times.
- Retail subscription: 2.72 times.
- Reliance shareholder quota subscribed 7.60 times
The strong listing was largely driven by heavy institutional participation, with QIB demand crossing 70 times. However, retail subscription was considerably more subdued at 2.72 times. The response highlights the confidence institutions have placed in Jio's market leadership, while also showing that enthusiasm was not equally strong across investor categories.
In our IPO Analysis, we had described the issue as "More Hype than Growth." Today's impressive listing premium certainly rewards investors who received allotments, but it does not necessarily invalidate that valuation concern. Strong institutional demand and limited publicly traded shares can support listing-day prices, while sustained returns will ultimately depend on earnings growth and cash generation.
The real test for Jio Platforms begins after the listing excitement settles. At Rs. 1,358, investors are paying a substantial premium for the company's leadership and future digital growth potential. Whether that premium is justified will depend on how quickly its earnings catch up with its market valuation.
In our IPO Analysis, we had concluded - Jio Platforms IPO is fully priced given its lower growth vis-à-vis Airtel. Track record of past large IPOs is stacked against Jio Platforms and hence the IPO can be given a miss.
