This is a very interesting find – you check the Board composition of most Indian companies and there are two surnames which are most likely to crop up almost everywhere – Gupta and Agarwal.
Someone actually did a study – a look at the name of directors of NSE in 1530 listed companies showed that there were 286 are surnamed Agarwal. The only difference is probably the way it is spelt – some write it Agarwal, some Agrawal, Agarawala or some Aggarwal. This is the “most popular” surname in that context.
Second “most popular” is Gupta. The study shows that some 125 independent and 101 non-independent directors have Gupta as a surname. Patel comes close on its heels. Wow! Now that’s some micro statistics for sure!
