What a way to learn!

You must have wondered so many times while studying in school and college or maybe even your children often ask you this question, “what is the point of studying this physics, math – especially the Geometry part which involves the circle!” Even after all that studying, the only thing we remember is the circnumference and radius! And to think that we were graded and our future choices depended on this knowledge which is useless for us today.

Yes, if you are not going to pursue a career in physics or Math or such subjects, the futility and frustration of going through them is drudgery. And Finland seems to have found a solution and a great one too! For students aged 16 and above, instead of merely teaching them through a book of geography or history or English or even Math and Science, they will be educated through events and phenomenon. Like the Second World War – instead of just teaching them about its history, students will be taught to examine it from the perspective of history, Math and geography. Or their course, “Working in a Café” where students will learn through a real life situation all about English language, communication skills, marketing, economics.

This system will be introduced for senior students, beginning at the age of 16. The general idea is that the students ought to choose for themselves which topic or phenomenon they want to study, bearing in mind their ambitions for the future and their capabilities. In this way, no student will have to pass through an entire course on physics or chemistry while all the time thinking to themselves “What do I need to know this for?”

The teachers are currently being trained in this new method and by 2020, the target year, all schools/colleges will adopt this way of studying.

Isn’t this an amazing way to educate the future generation?
