DVR shares' inclusion in BSE: Uncalled for!

BSE's announcement for inclusion of DVR shares in the index from June 2015 has lead to spurt in all the 4 listed DVRs - Tata Motors, Future retail, Jain Irrigation, Gujarat NRE Coke. But we have a contrarian view. We feel this inclusion is uncalled for, as index is for representing a company, and not the instrument.

Tata Motors DVR has been hitting new highs consistently. Future Retail DVR has not been hitting new highs but yesterday, it closed over 9% higher. Gujarat NRE Coke breached the upper circuit on 18th August and yesterday closed strongly in the green. Jain Irrigation is the only listed DVR which is in the red.

Why would we buy a DVR when we can get the shares, albeit at a higher price but with the assurance of a better dividend and power to vote if anything is going wrong in the company? Also with Nifty excluding Tata Motors DVR, the writing on the wall is that maybe one day, BSE might do the same. Thus at this point of time, no one is truly giving a thumbs up to DVRs.
