Are you planning to visit Shillong this month to see the cherry blossoms? If yes, there is an important update for you – if you are not a resident of Meghalaya and plan to stay there for over 24-hours, you have to mandatorily register with the Govt before entry. This new rule came into effect from last Friday.

And if you feel you don’t need to do as you are an Indian visiting an Indian state, beware. You don’t register and this could be treated as a violation of law and your stay there will be deemed illegal. You could be fined or even put behind bars, extending your stay to the beautiful state for up to six months.

So any time you go from now on to Meghalaya, you have register; you can do so online but one does not yet know the set of documents that would be required. It is something like the Inner Line Permit you need to get when you visit certain places in Ladakh, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

Obviously, this is a reaction to the National Register of Citizens (NRC)…..
