Sometimes, it takes a sharp rap on the knuckles and a hit on the money to wake up to one’s errors. Maruti having coped with some very ugly labour troubles does not want to take chances any more. Keeping its workers happy seems to have become a priority, which they have learnt the hard way, is the right way to keep the customers and the company happy. Workers happy toh sab happy!

Maruti is planning to offer  low-cost houses to its around 5,000 employees and it plans to set up an Employees Cooperation Committee by December which will be responsible for this housing development. The company will buy the land and till the committee is formed, will look after the development.  Both plant employees – Manesar as well as Gurgaon employees will be offered flats on self financing basis and to facilitate loans, the company plans to work with financial institutions who in turn, will provide easy loans with the help from MSI.

Is this what labour agitation does – wakes up the management to being fair and generous?
