IT stocks zoom up
Indian IT stocks rallied today, defying the sharp overnight sell-off in US technology shares. The Nifty IT index jumped 2.37% to an intraday high of 33,616.20, with nine of its ten constituents trading in the green. At 9:28 AM, the index was up 1.45% at 33,313.95. Mphasis led the gains, rising 4.46% to Rs. 2,622, followed by TCS, up 1.79% to Rs. 2,540.40, HCLTech, up 1.73%, and Infosys, which gained 1.58% to Rs. 1,185.90. Wipro also traded higher.
Trigger
- Sharp US technology sell-off: Nasdaq plunged 5.52% overnight, entering correction territory amid heavy selling in AI and semiconductor stocks.
- AI valuation concerns: Investors are questioning whether massive investments in AI infrastructure and data centres will generate adequate returns.
- Regulatory uncertainty: Concerns over potentially tighter US regulation of AI and data-centre expansion have added to selling pressure.
- Sector rotation: Investors appear to be shifting some attention from expensive AI hardware and semiconductor stocks towards traditional IT services companies.
- Relative valuation comfort: Indian IT companies have already undergone significant price corrections, making valuations comparatively less stretched than several global AI leaders.
The divergence reflects an important distinction between the two technology segments. US AI-linked companies are facing concerns over the enormous capital expenditure required for chips, data centres and infrastructure. Indian IT companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCLTech operate predominantly in software development, technology consulting, cloud services and business transformation, making them less directly exposed to the capital-intensive AI infrastructure cycle.
However, a correction in global AI stocks does not automatically translate into higher earnings for Indian IT companies. Their growth continues to depend heavily on technology spending by US and European clients. Any slowdown in discretionary expenditure, project delays or pressure on outsourcing budgets could affect revenue growth. AI-led automation also presents a longer-term challenge to traditional manpower-based billing models.
The current rally therefore appears driven more by a shift in investor sentiment and relative valuation considerations than by any immediate improvement in business fundamentals. Sustained gains will depend on stronger deal conversion, recovery in discretionary spending, improvement in revenue growth and the ability of Indian IT companies to monetise emerging AI opportunities.
