RBI POLICY – BALANCED, NO SUPRISES
As was widely expected, RBI did the logical thing – maintained a status quo, kept the interest rates unchanged. The MPC voted 5-1 to retain the accommodative stance as long as necessary to revive and sustain growth on a durable basis, while ensuring that inflation remains within the target.

NOT THE BORING 25 bps BUT INTERESTING 35 bps CUT!
Neither yours nor mine; neither 25 nor 50; RBI trimmed rates by 35 bps while maintaining its accommodative stance – this means there could more rate cuts or status quo but no rate hike. Well, 35 bps is closer to the 50 than to 25, that’s the silver lining here and we have given up going by the multiples of 25.
IIP CONTRACTS AGAIN – ARE WE AT THE BOTTOM YET?
As we see this dismal number, one quote of Guru Nanakji comes to mind, “That one plant should be sown and another be produced cannot happen; whatever seed is sown, a plant of that kind even comes forth.”
BUFFETT'S LETTER - LIFE LESSONS
This is the time of the year when Buffett pens his famous letter (via email) to the shareholders of Berkshire. Always pretty long, this time 19-pages, it’s a nugget of wisdom. Its not about where he is investing or how much money he made; its about getting a perspective into his way of thinking and in our small way, try to build in some of the character that he has.
RBI - LOOKING AT THE SUN, WALKING FORWARD
about 5 years ago
The overall tone which came off was dovish, given the threat of Omicron and the factor of heightened uncertainty remaining a constant. Quoting Gandhiji and Mandela, the Governor sounded more anxious, saying, “Global monetary policy is reaching an inflection point, keeping financial markets edgy. India cannot be immune to global spill-overs and spread of new infections.”

RBI AND ITS BOND WITH ‘BONDS’
There is one very important thing which happened, immediately after Moody’s upgrade. No, not the Padmavati row nor Miss World; it is RBI. RBI on Friday decided to scrap the proposed huge Rs.10,000 sale of bonds via open market operations (OMOs). This news, many say is the real reason for the over 400 points jump of the Sensex on Friday.

MARCH IIP – CRYING OUT FOR HELP
It was a pathetic IIP for March. It came in at -0.1% v/s 0.1% in Feb’19. And the good news is that April IIP will not improve much as auto sales have already indicated that. The contraction in March IIP is a 23-month low.
SEPT IIP – MANUFACTURING IS THE SILVER LINING
about 9 years ago
The IIP for Sept’17 came in at 3.8% much below what most had expected, especially given the fact that this was expected to be a good month, given the stocking that would have happened for the festive season. The heartening fact to note here is that manufacturing has picked up and so has capital goods.
TO BUY 'VALUE' OR 'GROWTH'?
Making money alone cannot be the criteria for investing - it is the driving force but it you do not look at growth or value as two decisive factors of investing, buying shares could always remains a losing proposition. But therein lay the flaw - growth and value are like Siamese twins joined at the hip and where growth is a component of calculating value. So what this means that every
OCT IIP - DISAPPOINTING AND DISCOURAGING
But the contraction of 1.8% in October was much more disappointing, much more than what most analysts had expected. Manufacturing accounts for 76% of the IIP and its contraction of 2% is a cause for worry. Electricity falling MoM from 12.9% to 1.3% was also shocking. And while expecting festive season
NOV IIP - FROM NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE, WILD SWINGS!
The November IIP numbers are volatile and that is putting things very mildly. From a negative growth in October, we now have not just a positive but a good growth at 5.9%. Such a wild swing? A five month high IIP at this juncture somehow seems unbelievable, especially....
DEC IIP - GETTING TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PIT
about 15 years ago
Next month is extremely decisive. Jan IIP numbers will come in on 12th March. The RBI will present its Credit Policy on 15th March and the Union Budget is scheduled for 16th March. Before that, next week, we have the inflation data coming in. In all likelihood, RBI
FEB IIP - THE SLOWDOWN IS MORE PRONOUNCED
about 15 years ago
Due to this change and also minor updation of data received from other source agencies, the IIP for January 2012 has been revised from 187.9 to 177.9 and, therefore, growth rate over the corresponding period of previous year has been revised from 6.8% to 1.1%. Further, cumulative index for the period April, 2011 to Jan'12 which was released as 169 has been revised to 168. Consequently, cumulative
AUG IIP - DOES IT MARK A TURNAROUND?
Better monsoon from July onwards might have gone on to help recoup the numbers for August. But the base effect is also playing up. Yet undoubtedly, demand has picked up and though auto sector was showing a fall in production and sales for a couple of months now, expectations were subdued.
JAN IIP - COMES AS A PLEASANT SURPRISE
The market was prepared for the worst, maybe more degrowth but definitely not anything good. And once again the Jan IIP numbers baffled everyone, coming in at 2.4% v/s wide expectations of around 1.5%. The growth was driven by electricity, coming in at 6.4%, the highest over the last few quarters. But capital goods continues to trail downwards and manufacturing showed a little bit of improvement at 1.1% v/s a degrowth in Dec
MARKET AWAITS THE THREE "I" - INFOSYS , IIP & INFLATION
about 14 years ago
Tomorrow is a big day for the markets; like it has been happenings on many occasions, the much awaited Q4 and FY13 numbers from Infosys are scheduled to be announced. This in a way officially marks the beginning of the "results season" much like the green shoots heralding the onset of spring.
RBI'S MOVES - NO GAIN WITHOUT PAIN
Foreign brokerage houses were swift to react and they all, like cattle in a herd, cut India's FY14 GDP forecast. The already despondent moods on Dalal Street got further depressed. Well, today the clouds are indeed darker but one should not blindly follow the herd. Yes, for now growth would be hurt but what the foreign brokerages
Q2FY15 - GIVES RBI MORE BREATHING SPACE
The Q2FY15 GDP numbers was expected to be mostly around 5% or some even less than 5%, at around 4.9%. So when the number came in at 5.3%, it was touted "much better than expected!" Though sequentially, the number has actually gone down. The big drag this time has been manufacturing which came just about managed to hold on to above 1% mark at a measly 0.1% - a huge drop down from 3.5% in Q1.
RBI POLICY – NO CUT, NO ACTION
So no surprises today – the RBI maintained its status quo and no rate cut was announced while it has most certainly further upped its ante on inflation. But its outlook for the future has turned a bit dovish as of now, mainly on account of rising inflation. It cut the growth for FY18 too by 60 bps. And none of these forecasts for inflation and growth is no different from what most of us expected.
CREDIT POLICY - KEEPS RATES UNCHANGED, PRAGMATIC OUTLOOK
about 12 years ago
Whew! The much expected, at least by analysts and economists happened - the RBI Governor, Raghuram Rajan did not change the rates; repo, reverse repo and CRR were left unchanged. But the good news here is that RBI has stated in the policy that if the current inflation momentum continues and fiscal developments remain encouraging, a change in the monetary policy stance is likely early next year,
FINALLY SOME GOOD NEWS ON IIP AND CPI FRONT!
After the depressing markets and the even more disturbing happenings in the Parliament, the CPI and IIP data which came in later in the evening were worth cheering. At last some good news! First July CPI. Food inflation came in at 2.15% v/s 5.48% (MoM) and that alone helped the overall CPI come at down at 3.78% v/s 5.4% (MoM).
7TH PAY COMMISSION - TO BOOST CONSUMPTION
about 11 years ago
There are various other recommendations; after all it is a very detailed 900-page document. This is good news for the Govt employees but for the Govt itself, it could mean that it puts a question mark of the Finance Minister's ability to meet the fiscal deficit target of 3.5% of GDP. This pay hike will put more money in the hands of people with no real increase in supply - today's statement by Rajan, expressing his worry over no increase in public and private investments in the country,
CHINESE YUAN - THE DANCE OF DESTRUCTION
The Chinese turmoil has become deeper. That's the sense we get today morning. The Chinese Govt once again, took the entire world by surprise by guiding its currency, the yuan lower, plunging all stock markets into the red. Chinese central bank cut its yuan reference rate by the most since August, sparking a selloff. China's yuan currency was guided lower by 0.51
Q3FY16 - WHAT TO EXPECT?
The earning season for Q3FY16 "officially" kicks in from tomorrow; though we have had some small and mid cap companies declare their numbers, the first big wig is tomorrow - TCS. Just as Infosys has lost its mantle of being the most favored IT stock to TCS, it has given up that lead in declaring
RBI CREDIT POLICY - MOVING BEYOND INTEREST RATES
about 11 years ago
No surprises on the rate cut front but surely, the RBI went all out to address the liquidity crunch by easing on various fronts. This is a first - the RBI has shown that rate cut alone is not the only arsenal; it can help resolve the liquidity issues and help better transmission through other policy easing measures. This is huge as it actually means a reversal of six years of policy where banks and bond markets have always operated in deficits
