Stocks impacted by Middle east conflict

Our take is that volatility will persist until there’s clarity on duration and escalation; in the meantime, diversified balance sheets and business mixes should hold up better than concentrated GCC-dependent earnings streams, with stock performance driven as much by risk-off flows as by fundamentals.
Market trips on oil
Crude crossed $110/barrel and this, the market typically treats it as a macro shock first (inflation + CAD + rupee + rates), and only then a stock-specific story. IS THIS THE 'SEASON' TO BUY 'CYCLICAL' STOCKS?
Cyclical stocks are those which move in tandem with the business cycles and reflect the state of the economy and not the changes in the season. For eg: when there the economy is booming, there is a demand for luxury goods or when there is a recession, automobiles show a slump in demand. This in short is cyclical.
OVER 100 YEARS OLD, STILL ALIVE AND KICKING!
There are a few handful companies which are historic in the sense, they have witnessed two world wars, seen the various revolutions, the Great Depression, India's freedom struggle, liberalization and evolution of mankind from mechanics to now electronics and digitization. When we meet a centenarian, we often wonder about that which his eyes would have witnessed, the times he lived through and the very different world he lives in today.
CYCLICAL AND SEASONAL STOCKS - ARE THEY THE BEST 'DEFENSE'?
In stock market parlance, they are essentially different. Cyclical stocks are those which move in tandem with the business cycles and reflect the state of the economy and not the changes in the season. For eg: when there the economy is booming, there is a demand for luxury goods or when there is a recession, automobiles show a slump in demand. This in short is cyclical. The products of the company share the same pattern as the economy and that is what makes them cyclical. To understand better, use the reference of the

The Great Sphinx of Giza would be watching over Cairo with a lot of anguish. The river Nile continues to nourish the country but the Egyptians seem to be moving from one revolution to the other. More than the Sphinx, the Tahrir Square has become more vital.
TURNAROUND IN MOODS - LONG LASTING OR TEMPORARY?
Undoubtedly, there is a turnaround in sentiments. From being morose and pessimistic, there is a perceptible shift to hopeful and optimistic. Downgrades and current account be damned; those are thorns which the markets have decided will take once the economy is kick started by the new FM, Dr.Manmohan Singh.
PAINT COMPANIES - RED OR GREEN?
Have you seen TV lately? Switch to any channel and every ad break invariably shows some or the other paint company, urging us to either redo our homes or repaint or even put up false ceilings. Festivals have come calling and all companies are hoping to make the most; after all this is THE season for all. But vying for maximum out of this season are the paint companies. The way they are going on TV, they are going all out, almost like a make and break kind of scene.

CRUDE – OUR POCKETS AND ECONOMY TO GET CHEWED!
Two years ago, we were looking at crude oil prices at $20/barrel and oil producing countries were crying barrels of tears. Today, they are a mighty happy lot what with crude nearing the three digit, $100/barrel mark. There is talk of $115, $114 and more such numbers doing the rounds. No one at this point of time is taking a call on the Sensex or the Nifty as all seem to have become busy plotting crude oil and the rupee’s trajectory.
THE INDELIBLE LINK BETWEEN OIL AND GOLD
Right now, equities are down, oil is slumping every day, realty is down. The only price moving up is that of gold. And this is normal – when everything else is down, it indicates increased uncertainty and that means gold becomes the safe haven. So the very same yellow metal which was shunned by everyone and analysts were talking big about price hitting new lows, is now suddenly back in the limelight.
THE CURIOUS CASE OF RISING CRUDE
Crude oil is climbing high and with it, all these chest beating reports on India from World Bank could end up being just that – on paper, just a report. Not to break the bubble…oops, balloon but seriously, as one climbs higher and higher up the Sensex and Nifty ladder, do look around – you might see crude going up alongside and that’s most certainly not a pretty sight.
OIL AT AROUND $40 LEVELS – THE NEW NORM?
Really, there is nothing which will make us humans happy, more so those in the capital market. Till a few months ago, we were ruing our fortune when oil prices were scaling above $100/barrel. We felt that we were about to lose it all and oil prices would cripple our limping economy. Ok, so then we had falling oil prices. Oil prices are back to hovering at $40/barrel levels – around $42/barrel. OPEC has decided to not cut back on supplies any more as it is scared of losing its market shares even though it is ready to take a hit on its earnings.
AS CRUDE SLIPS AND FALLS, EQUITIES CRASH
Today morning, price of oil sank to a 12-year low with Brent crude trading down 3% at $27.88 a barrel. Following this, shares across Asia and Europe sank lower and there is now a virtual scamper to find safer havens like US dollar and gold. Naturally, along with the 600-points fall in equities, rupee inched closer to the record low of Rs.68.85

CYCLICAL AND SEASONAL STOCKS - ARE THEY THE BEST 'DEFENSE'?

Blue Chip Stocks
Generally, blue chips are regarded as the best or ones with the highest quality and return to shareholders. However, that does not always mean best performance for the past one year. Blue chips are sturdy companies unaffected badly by macro shocks and are dependable companies, with a proven track record over the long term.

CAUGHT IN THE CROSS-FIRE OF JARGONS
There are so many jargons and sometimes, the common man is caught right in these war or words, literally, not knowing what to do. The biggest confusion right now is -cyclical and seasonal. Discerning analysts are currently recommending cyclical stocks and then there are some who say that it is best to buy into selective seasonal stocks. Then there are growth stocks and defensive stocks. And we thought we were buying only into stocks?
GST RATES – MIDDLE CLASS CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE AGAIN!

For once we all will remember Srinagar for more than just terror attacks and insurgency. It will be marked as the place where the most crucial aspect of the GST – the rates were brainstormed and finally fixed. Yes, yesterday, India moved a step closer to the July 1st deadline by fixing rates on 1150 items of the total 1211 in the GST basket.
NOT "WHAT", ITS "HOW" TO BUY
Growth needs to be looked at from a free flowing cash perspective and how well it can be used for future growth enhancement. What is the point of a company giving high dividends and having good profits, if all its cash is to be eaten up by paying interest on the high debt it has taken?

AND SO THE ‘CYCLE’ TURNS….

Well, these various jargons are used by brokerage houses to collectively indicate where they are currently parking their funds. Ultimately they all remain growth stocks – fundamentally sound but with that, these various categories are like a subset.
WHAT TO BUY? OR “HOW” TO BUY?
“Any stock worth buying?” That seems to be the constant quip every time the market goes up. Indices are hitting historic highs and stocks too, making one wonder whether it is worth buying at such high valuations.
INDIA INC – STINGY WHEN IT COMES TO CSR
When Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was made mandatory, there was a big hue and cry. Why force companies to give? That was the moot question. But a recent finding put out by Bloomberg is even more telling, making us wonder whether we really know the companies that we are investing in. It also makes us wonder whether we should consider a company’s CSR as a criteria for investing.
What is meant by Small, Mid and Large Cap Stocks?
The stocks in the share market are classified on the basis of the market capitalisation of individual companies, where market capitalization is the number of issued equity shares of the company multiplied by the current market price. On this basis, stocks can be broadly classified into three categories - large, mid and small cap.
