RBI CREDIT POLICY - MOVING BEYOND INTEREST RATES

No surprises on the rate cut front but surely, the RBI went all out to address the liquidity crunch by easing on various fronts. US IMMIGRATION BILL - DRAFT OF THIS WIND PROMISES A STORM

The bill has proposed to give a new status to the illegal - calling them 'Registered Provisional Immigrants' where they will neither be citizens not be granted a green card but they will merely have a legal status of being illegal. They can roam around and work freely in US, without fearing deportation. This will not free and quick - it's a 10 year long process wherein one has to pay $500 for applying for a legal status

GOLD BUYING TO BE CURBED BY IIBs? NAAH!!

Apart from hikes in duties, our honorable Finance Minister has proposed the introduction of Inflation-Indexed Bonds or IIBs. The idea is indeed in the right direction - when investors are given an alternate investment option, which helps you hedge against rising inflation, the FM hopes that IIB will do the trick. Real estate and gold, move with costs and these

FRUGAL V/S MISER - FOOD FOR THOUGHT FOR WEEKEND

There is a very thin line between living a frugal life and being called a miser. But people generally have a tendency to club both these together and are usually said in the same breath. Yet, there is a world of difference between the two. Simply put, a frugal person is someone who lives simply, not denying himself anything in life but at the same time, questioning himself at every juncture when he is tempted to buy something whether he "really" needs it. The question is, "Do I need it? "

FIVE-YEAR PLANS - MERELY INTELLECTUAL SPECULATIONS

For us Indians, the five year plan is like a big joke. When someone does not complete the work and only makes plan, it is very common to hear people quip, "What, are you like India's five-year plans? Only plan and no work!"

JAYANTI NATARAJAN 'NIP's AT NATIONAL INVESTMENT BOARD

She has called the NIB unconstitutional and "completely unacceptable". She says that when her department, the Environment department rejects a proposal, on grounds of violating environment laws, then no panel should have the power to overrule that decision. Oh really!

GREEK EXIT - NO DIVORCE IS DEVOID OF PAIN

All in all, the exit will be bad news for the Greek and all around. But the bigger worry is that if Greek exits, will others like Portugal, Italy and others also line up for an exit? For India, being globally linked up, this will cause a lot of pain.

THE PLIGHT OF BUILDERS GETS WORSE

Yesterday, I happened to bump into a builder. He is small time builder, basically taking up redevelopment of old buildings. He has three projects which are under construction. He has various liabilities, the first and foremost being paying a monthly outgo of Rs.50-60,000 to his 20 to 30-odd 'tenants' who

BENAMI PROPERTY - IT'S ALL IN THE NAME!

This salvo proposed to be fired against benami property could not have come at a better time. At a time when demonetization drive has as such dealt a body blow to the sector, this going after the benami property with tongs and knives is perfect. Benami in simple Hindi means that which does not have a name. So benami property means that which does not have an owner. We usually see in India that

SHOULD YOU HOLD 'HOLDING' COMPANIES?

Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation recently hit a new 52-week high at Rs.636. The stock price defies all logic when one looks at the financials - for Q1FY17, its net sales dropped 3% (YoY) at Rs.63 crore and the company ultimately ended Q1 with a net loss of Rs.4 crore. So why this kind of valuation?

DEFAULT OF RCOM – COULD THIS BRING THE BROTHERS BACK TOGETHER?

Anil Ambani would most certainly be having some sleepless nights. Or even if he manages to sleep well, the 17 banks who have lent him money would be tossing, turning and groaning. That Anil Ambani is entrapped under a mound of debt is not new news; we all have been mute witnesses to the way he let his ambitions rise unbridled and went on taking money from the banks;

NET NEUTRALITY IS BACK IN NEWS!

Net Neutrality is back on the discussion menu! Two years ago, everyone was talking about it and all of a sudden it died down. Once again it is being debated ferociously and this is thanks to USA. Six days ago, USA poked a stick in this bee hive saying that it was rolling back net neutrality rules; it plans to scrap landmark 2015 rules intended to ensure a free and open internet

IIP JUMPS UP, SO DOES INFLATION!

This was very good news, especially given the gloom and doom. IIP for July was much higher than expected – a good thing, while retail inflation for August was also much higher than expected – which is not such a good thing.

ECONOMIC SURVEY - SNAKES & LADDER UP AHEAD

The Survey has laid a lot of importance on consumption growing to pre-pandemic levels led through Govt spending on infra and uptick in housing cycle helping revive the construction sector. Based on this commentary it would be safe to say that the Budget tomorrow will continue to focus on boosting the realty sector and increase consumer spending.

RBI - LOOKING AT THE SUN, WALKING FORWARD

The overall tone which came off was dovish, given the threat of Omicron and the factor of heightened uncertainty remaining a constant. Quoting Gandhiji and Mandela, the Governor sounded more anxious, saying, “Global monetary policy is reaching an inflection point, keeping financial markets edgy. India cannot be immune to global spill-overs and spread of new infections.”

NFTs - PROOF THAT WORLD IS GETTING MADDER!

Having dabbled in stocks, especially IPOs; having bought innumerable realty projects; FDs and bonds are even beyond count; gold and diamond is like passe; so when people like these have more surplus money to invest, where do the well-heeled High Networth Individuals (HNIs) put the money?

HUNGRY – FOR FOOD AND NOT POWER….

Like we did the last time too, India has voiced strong objection to this ranking, saying that the publishers “have not done their due diligence before releasing the report". The Govt has said that the FAO methodology is “unscientific", saying that “the scientific measurement of undernourishment

EDB SCRAPPED - BEST NEWS EVER!!

Ironic, the pet peeve of PM Mr.Modi, the Ease of Doing Business Index has been discontinued and this news comes right on his birthday. But then birthdays are for new beginnings – so maybe the focus needed to be shifted to better and more meaningful index. And frankly speaking, this index did not really show us the true picture on the ground.

IPOs FOR INSTITUTIONS ONLY???

And what SEBI is looking at is something like a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) but QIP is usually of a listed company and this proposal is for companies to be listed. Like QIPs, there might be rules – presence of at least 2 institutions if the issue size if less than Rs.250 and 5 if more than Rs.250 crore – no single institution is allowed to corner more than 50% of the issue.

SUEZ - AA SU CHE?

People who have never even been on a ship or even a small boat turned experts. Questions were being asked - Does this mean that the canals have to be widened? Do such large ships now need some change in the design to ensure that this never gets repeated? And more importantly, are there alternative routes?

WINSTRON- NOT A WIN FROM ANY ANGLE

Eleven days ago, it was pretty shameful when several thousands of workers at this Apple manufacturing unit, Wistron Corporation, ransacked the office, set cars on fire, broke windows and doors. This shows that the workers were pushed to the corner, they had reached the limit of their patience as all their complaints fell on deaf ears.

AUDITING ‘FROM HOME’ - AN AUDACITY

Almost everyone seems to be working from home. But there are some jobs, which simply cannot be done from home like a plumber, carpenter, painter, doctors, sanitation workers, nurses, police, salesmen, beauticians, factory floor workers, hoteliers and so many more. In all this, have you wondered how an auditor can work from home?

NO EDB INDEX – CAN GOVT CONCENTRATE ON US NOW?

We heaved a sigh of relief when we learnt that the WHO has decided to take a pause on the publication of the Doing Business report as a number of irregularities have been reported regarding changes to the data in the Doing Business 2018 and Doing Business 2020 reports, published in October 2017 and 2019.

SCRAPPAGE POLICY – THIS COULD REALLY MOVE THE ECONOMY

The logic is simple – if you have a gas guzzling old car, 15 years and older, you need to get it off the road and buy a new, more fuel-efficient car. This is expected to have a two prong benefit – make the air cleaner by removing these clunkers off the road and boost demand for automobiles

TAKING A ‘U’ TURN ON ONE-WAY ROAD

MORE BILLIONAIRES, MORE HUNGER

That’s the thought which comes to mind every time we dig out news on India’s rising poverty rate and growing hunger index. We use the word, “dig.” This news is never really flashed all across like the way the Ease of Doing Business index is. So govt continues to concentrate on making the environment right for the businessmen but gives two hoots for those living in the lowest rung of the economic ladder.

DESPACITO – SLOWLY GETTING DESPONDENT

If the Govt had thought that it could have got the market to celebrate and soar with their merger announcements on Friday; well, it gauged the moods completely wrong. The overhang of the slowdown, the further falling sales numbers of the auto sector and another merger news of BPCL into Indian Oil Corporation kept the markets down, really really down.

THE STRANGE CASE OF LAFARGE….

MARKETS LOOKING MUCH BEYOND IIP AND CPI

July IIP came in at 6.6% v/s 6.9% (MoM) and the retail inflation or CPI for August was at 3.69% v/s 4.17% (MoM) – this is a 10-month low. So inflation cools down and growth was steady.. that in short is the story of today.

THE INSTIABLE LURE FOR HOLDING COMPANIES

Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation, three months ago hit a new 52-week high at Rs.1820. The stock price defies all logic when one looks at the financials - for Q3FY18, the company posted a net loss of Rs.70 lakh and it has been posting losses all along. So why this kind of valuation?

OIL BOILS – POLITICS OR ECONOMICS?

PNB FRAUD INTERNAL REPORT – FRUSTRATING AND DEPRESSING

The 162-page internal report of PNB says it all. The fraud was there to see but the typical attitude of Govt organisations, to flout norms and rules, blatantly doing away with all good practices; that’s what led to this scam. The PSU banks are so quick to show us, the customers, the rule book every time we question some meaningless rule; if only they had followed the rules….

NOT ABLE TO LET GO – INJURIOUS TO ITC’s PROFESSIONAL LIFE!

Yogi Deveshwar and ITC seem to be synonyms for each other – who derives meaning to their name more – Deveshwar from ITC or ITC from Deveshwar; that’s an over two decade old question. It seemed there could be no life for each other without each other! Looks like the same story continues even today though a new CEO was appointed and Deveshwar is the non-executive chairman.

JUST 71 YEARS YOUNG

For the next generation, this Independence Day means just a holiday and the relevance of what our forefathers went through is not even comprehensible. But then it is understandable given the progress we have made on all fronts – economic yes but socially we have a long, long way to go to claim that Bharat lives in an independent India.

AND WE WAIT FOR “THE INDEX”……

The market going up because Patel and Jaitley will bury the hatchet and move on? Seems unlikely that this could lead to an over 450 points jump that we see currently (2.45pm). Actually, the real reason, as we perceive is the Ease of Doing Business Ranking. This ranking is to be announced to today

IIP SLUMPS - REFLECTS THE GROUND REALITY

IIP for June came in at 2% v/s 3.1% in May and it put forth what we all knew all along – the economy is slowing down and slowing down fast. With the auto sector almost gutted, realty also down in the dumps, these numbers of industrial production, at least as of now seem merely symbolic

IT WAS GOOD NEWS ALL AROUND!

It was good news. IIP and CPI, both were good. IIP for Oct, thanks to the festive demand of Diwali, rose sharply to 8.1% v/s 4.5% (MoM). Mining was up 7%, manufacturing rose to 7.9% and electricity was up 10.8%.

ANGEL TAX – REMOVE THE DEVIL!

MARKET JUMPS BUT GROW PLUMMETS

After the super duper day of trading, where the Sensex ended with a jaw dropping 481 points jump, the macroeconomic numbers were a dose of reality. The market might already be celebrating the election outcome, IIP numbers for January’19 are like a douse of cold water.

LOOKING BACK AS WE LOOK FORWARD

Well, the wait and uncertainty is all over. Now we look forward to some more stability and hopefully, better macroeconomic policies, which will kick start the growth story for India. So as we end this tumultuous week, we thought we will look at some of the interesting tidbits of this Lok Sabha 2019 elections.

IIP JUMPS UP – MORE BAFFLING THAN SURPRISING

The IIP for April came in surprisingly at 3.4% v/s -0.1% (MoM). It really left everyone kind of baffled; maybe it is the spurt in the manufacturing sector which showed the jump and also the capital goods. But then the Manufacturing PMI was down thus somewhere this does not add up. Given this kind of volatility in the IIP and a huge disconnect between the actual ground realities, in the background of today’s research report by Arvind Subramanian

GROWTH SLOWS, INFLATION PICKS UP PACE

IIP for May came in lower at 3.1% v/s 3.4% (MoM) and CPI was at 3.18% for June v/s 3.05% (MoM) and this was obviously led by increase in prices of food and vegetables/fruits. Growth for May is a disappointment but then looking at the high frequency data for the past few months, this does not come as a surprise at all
