RBI THROWS A GOOGLY - HIKES REPO RATE BY 25 BPS
about 13 years ago
This rate hike is keeping in line with the Urjit Patel report where the RBI is looking at a shift from WPI to CPI and priority remains price stability though the Governor did voice concern over the falling growth. The forward guidance given by RBI is dovish and this would be highly data dependent. A "dovish" stance means there are no aggressive undertones to the document. On the other hand, a "hawkish" tone would have meant the exact opposite

BERNANKE DEFINES TIMELINE FOR EASING OF QE
about 14 years ago
Ben Bernanke's much anticipated Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) on Wednesday was a non event. But then, that would be unfair; at least Bernanke buoyed up the markets by saying that he was keeping the $85 billion monthly bond buying program intact. So QE remains, the stimulus remains.
POLITICS OF POVERTY AND POVERTY OF POLITICS
about 13 years ago
There is simply no denying the fact that it is economic growth alone which has helped more people get off the poverty line. The Indian economy, during the last eight years has shown a growth of over 9% in at least four years. At the same time, rural prosperity has increased. Agricultural wages have never been this high and this means increased purchasing power for rural India. Real rural wages have also
JULY FOMC MEET - A NON EVENT, UNCERTAINTY CONTINUES!
It was a non-event, no firework announcements on QE easing as expected. In fact there had been more action on the Indian bourses - it was an action packed day with the Commerce Minister doing his bit, the finance minister giving us his one year 'report card' and tried to keep hopes intact. RBI also stepped in with some reassuring statements. But it was ultimately Ben Bernanke
FOMC MINUTES - UNCERTAINTY ON TIME AND AMOUNT OF EASING CONTINUES
about 13 years ago
The news was that most Fed officials at Fed were comfortable with Bernanke's plan to start tapering Q2 before the end of this year, if the economy improves. The interesting part is that despite the headlines, the minutes indicate that four out of the seven members preferred to wait for some more time before the beginning the tapering; felt "a change in the purchase program was not yet appropriate."

NO TAPERING ! THE UNCERTAINTY CONTINUES....
This is naturally good news for the markets but at the same time, what this also means is that the uncertainty continues. The tapering is inevitable but just when the markets and the marketmen were psychologically prepared for a tapering - markets would not react overtly if tapering is to the tune of $10-15 billion and could crash if around $20 billion or more.
REALTY - THE BUBBLE HAS TO BURST

APRIL IIP - AT LEAST IT IS NOT NEGATIVE!
Slow growth is consitently driven by investment collapse. Cutting interest rates is not the sole medicine and is not enough but tseems to be the only step at the moment which can buoy the sentiments to some extent. Those in the market feel like it's a slam dunk decision - that RBI will cut rates. But one has to take a bigger view and look at other macro factors,
FOMC MEET - THANKFULLY NO SHOCKERS; ANOTHER $10B SHAVED OFF
about 13 years ago
The Fed had very much indicated in March itself that GDP would be down but then had called it a temporary decline mainly caused by winter storms. FOMC MEET - AS EXPECTED, QUIET WITH NO SURPRISES

It was as expected - a quiet Federal Reserve meet chaired by Janet Yellen. There was anticipation that she might announce a timeline for a rate hike next year but obviously, Yellen wanted to avoid making any hawkish statements which might ruffle not just US markets but world over.
FOMC MEET - ANOTHER $10 BILLION REDUCTION, NO HIKE IN INTEREST RATES

So once more, the Fed seems to have got more comfortable in the shoes that it is wearing - the near 0% interest rate remains intact for six years now. INDIAN RETAIL - M&As WILL BE THE ONLY WAY HEAD
about 12 years ago
These few changes over the past few years convey one single message - keep a tab on the emerging new ways of doing the same old things and change, or else get left behind. Nokia, Kodak are all examples of companies which failed because they simply worked on the age-old formula of boosting profit and lowering cost when business faltered but did not pay close attention to how technology had simply changed the way people were doing things. That's what we are seeing today in the Indian retail sector. The way we shop today has undergone a complete change.

THE DANGEROUS PURSUIT OF PENNY STOCKS

Sometimes, it is difficult to understand the psyche of the investor. In a bull market, when the markets are booming and almost all stocks have run much ahead of valuation, hunting for penny stocks comes naturally, or should we say, is any hunters instinct. CCI PROBE OF OMCS - A FUTILE EXERCISE

CCI believes there is cartelization in increasing and decreasing prices of a deregulated commodity such as petrol by the 3 state OMCs. Logic warrants that cartelization is undertaken only with an objective to benefit. If the OMCs are losing money on every litre of petrol they sell, how can the alleged cartelization stand to fleece the consumers and benefit the companies? Under-recovery, in no language, stands for 'gains'!

Thus ethical investing means putting money in companies

INFLATION COMING DOWN, OH SOOO SLOWLY!!!
If inflation is coming down, even if slowly, does it mean that we are looking at inflation climbing down to comfortable levels soon? That would be too early to predict; the truth is that inflation is not going to fall down to 4% any time soon; we are probably looking at FY24 and ahead for that elusive 4%.
FED MOVES, WILL RBI MOVE TOO?
The Fed has finally set the ball rolling. This rate hike will come months later, avoiding any rapid shifts, giving enough time for markets around the world to accept the change, helping avert any major shifts and shocks that could damage the fragile recovery. For us here, it is sure to make RBI ponder
AS WE LOOK AHEAD……
We have entered into July and the second quarter of FY22 has begun. Unlike the first quarter, Q1FY22, where the doom and gloom of Corona overshadowed everything else, this quarter holds the promise of a lot of good tidings. There is sense of optimism as the pandemic has ebbed a bit – not gone, there yet but at least vaccination is happening. The day-to-day activities are not yet normal but not as restricted as before
TALIBAN TAKES CONTROL WHILE BULLS TAKOEVER
about 5 years ago
The headlines all across the world screamed the capture of Kabul by the Taliban. It filled the heart with a sense of dread and foreboding and we do not know where this is heading. And then we see the stock markets. Even there, we do not know where it is heading too!
GDP Q1FY22 – BABY KO ‘BASE’ PASAND HAI!!
The YoY GDP picture looks completely skewed. And sequentially too, Q1 picture is looking big because of the second wave being at its peak in Q4, when lockdown on account of the second wave took its toll. Q1FY22 GDP came in at 20.1% v/s (-)24.4% (YoY) and v/s 1.6% (QoQ). The lower base effect makes the Q1FY22 growth look deceptively high
RBI POLICY – BALANCED, NO SUPRISES
As was widely expected, RBI did the logical thing – maintained a status quo, kept the interest rates unchanged. The MPC voted 5-1 to retain the accommodative stance as long as necessary to revive and sustain growth on a durable basis, while ensuring that inflation remains within the target.
HUNGRY – FOR FOOD AND NOT POWER….
Like we did the last time too, India has voiced strong objection to this ranking, saying that the publishers “have not done their due diligence before releasing the report". The Govt has said that the FAO methodology is “unscientific", saying that “the scientific measurement of undernourishment
INFLATION PUSHES FED TO "FAST FORWARD"
And at 12.30am tonight, with CPI at the highest level since 1982, all these questions were answered. Adopting a more hawkish tone, the Fed is aggressively dialing back its monthly bond buying and sees three rate hikes in 2022 and three in 2023. It plans to end the taper or bond buying by March, three months ahead of its earlier schedule of June.
LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD
What we need to watch out for in Q3 earnings - the amount of de-leveraging done and how debt costs have come down. Cost management will be key in Q3 earnings and keep a watch on the cash flow – that will indicate the presence or absence of stress. As raw material costs rise, companies resorted to cleaning up their balance sheets,
PROJECT COMPLETION LINKED TO ELECTIONS
CMIE has put out a report stating that FY22 could end up breaking all record when it comes to project completion. Now that’s a huge achievement under the current circumstances but then again, its all thanks to the elections in UP. Does this all have to do with the upcoming elections in the state in Feb? Obviously! More than 36% of total project completion was from UP while under ‘no election’ period,
CRUDE – OUR POCKETS AND ECONOMY TO GET CHEWED!
Two years ago, we were looking at crude oil prices at $20/barrel and oil producing countries were crying barrels of tears. Today, they are a mighty happy lot what with crude nearing the three digit, $100/barrel mark. There is talk of $115, $114 and more such numbers doing the rounds. No one at this point of time is taking a call on the Sensex or the Nifty as all seem to have become busy plotting crude oil and the rupee’s trajectory.

ARE THE MARKETS/STOCKS OVERVALUED?
Paying Rs.100 for something worth Rs.10…that’s how many are today looking at the market/stock valuations. Many are advising people to stay away now as they feel that stock market has run ahead of its fundamentals or is grossly overvalued.

Q3FY12 - WHAT TO EXPECT OR BEST, EXPECT NOTHING!
Last fiscal Q3FY11 held more promise and more than sustainability, it was about good growth. But this fiscal, Q3, especially after a not-so-good Q2 and interest regime and falling rupee, does not paint an overall good picture. A trim to the topline growth and surely a hair cut for the bottomline growth seems inevitable...

Q3FY21 GDP – BACK IN THE GREEN!!!
The Q3FY21 GDP came in at 0.4%, maybe much lower than what many expected. But the fact is, it did come in the positive and that in itself is good news. So, we can say that the ‘V” is slowly but surely forming. Till the services sector, led by trade, hotel, transport and communication does not get back on track
