CYCLICAL AND SEASONAL STOCKS - ARE THEY THE BEST 'DEFENSE'?
In stock market parlance, they are essentially different. Cyclical stocks are those which move in tandem with the business cycles and reflect the state of the economy and not the changes in the season. For eg: when there the economy is booming, there is a demand for luxury goods or when there is a recession, automobiles show a slump in demand. This in short is cyclical. The products of the company share the same pattern as the economy and that is what makes them cyclical. To understand better, use the reference of the

So much has changed this Diwali. There are people thronging the shopping areas but most sane people are shopping online, there is no rush to buy fire crackers. Gift hampers have become weird – we now have “combos” of hand sanitisers, masks and gloves. Tailors are stitching “matching” masks and clothes. And for most of us, all this dressing up will be for again staying at home.
LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
2020 has taught us many life lessons and one more important learning – its impossible to predict the entire next year when we cannot predict the next second in our lives. Yet, we as humans need to have a roadmap, something which chalks our path and gives a rough idea about what to expect in the coming days.
IIP GROWS, CPI FALLS
The IIP numbers for December indicate what we all were kind of looking for – the economic growth is slowly but surely getting broad based. After six straight months of contraction, the IIP finally turned the corner and came in positive.
PARLIAMENT – ONLY AND ONLY POLITICS
Obviously, with so much happening on the political front, no constructive debate is expected to happen and like always, the Finance Bill will get passed without even a whimper or a voice of protest. There are some 25 other Bills too but all are likely to get passed on to the next session.
CAUGHT IN THE CROSS-FIRE OF JARGONS
There are so many jargons and sometimes, the common man is caught right in these war or words, literally, not knowing what to do. The biggest confusion right now is -cyclical and seasonal. Discerning analysts are currently recommending cyclical stocks and then there are some who say that it is best to buy into selective seasonal stocks. Then there are growth stocks and defensive stocks. And we thought we were buying only into stocks?
JSPL – JAAGO SHAREHOLDER, JAAGO!!
It is good to see shareholders showing their might, especially against mighty companies, who sometimes fool themselves into thinking that they are invincible, beyond everyone’s reach. Such ‘vigilant’ shareholdership’ should grow, taking on the role of a watchdog. Today, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) was to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) but that has now been postponed and the new date is yet to be announced.
JUNE – HALF YEAR GONE OR HALF YEAR LEFT?
June holds all the promise of a Salman Khan movie though let’s hope its not a ‘Radhe’ which we get dumped with. This is going to be an action packed 15-days. There is so much macro data coming in that we will be reeling, number crunching; really, how many numbers does one small brain keep track of - the GDP, fiscal deficit, IIP, CPI, not to mention the Sensex, Nifty and stock prices and over and above all these, the corona numbers too!
FUNDS - BEYOND MAKING ONLY PROFITS
Shareholder activism is not a privilege - it is a right and a responsibility. When we invest in a company, we own part of that company and we are partly responsible for how that company progresses. If we believe there is something going wrong with the company hen we, as shareholders, must become active and vocal
DIWALI - THERE IS HAPPINESS IN THE AIR
Today is Narakachaturdashi – it symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. With ‘good’ reigning, we get into worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, not just for wealth but for bestowing us with all the intangible ‘goods’ of life. Goddess Lakshmi is no doubt, the Goddess of prosperity but prosperity is not only money but prosperity of emotions, knowledge, health, wisdom.
EVENTS THAT WILL DEFINE 2020
The second day of 2020 has dawned and we are finally wide awake, having got over the stupor of the last few days of holidaying. Just as the clout of China is growing everywhere, even when it comes to a new year, the Chinese ‘animal’ is followed by the global community. This year, 2020, is the year of the rat, the metal rat – the first animal of the 12-year cycle of the zodiac
TECHNICALLY, IN RECESSION?
This was very much on expected lines. India’s GDP for Q4FY22 came in at 4.1% v/s 5.4% (QoQ) and v/s 1.6% (YoY). GDP for FY22 was at 8.7% v/s (-)6.6% (YoY) but much below the 8.9% projected by the Statistics Ministry in Feb. This is better than 7.3% for FY21. When GDP contracts for two consecutive quarters, technically, the country is in recession.
Q3FY12 - WHAT TO EXPECT OR BEST, EXPECT NOTHING!
Last fiscal Q3FY11 held more promise and more than sustainability, it was about good growth. But this fiscal, Q3, especially after a not-so-good Q2 and interest regime and falling rupee, does not paint an overall good picture. A trim to the topline growth and surely a hair cut for the bottomline growth seems inevitable...

TIME TO WALK THE TALK
People might be divided right across the middle when it comes to some ideologies of BJP and Modi. But what the entire country agrees unanimously is that Modi is one of the best orators India has had in recent times. His speeches have always inspired people and such skills are very rare in today’s time.
HAPPY DIWALI – LET THE LIGHT SHINE !!!
The festival of lights has begun. Dhanatrayodashi marks the beginning of the mega festivities – this is the biggest and last big festival for majority of Hindus. Kaarti and Chhoti Diwali, Tulsi vivah… all that will follow but none of them will be as big as Diwali – the climax of all festivities through the year.
BABAs TRANSFORMING INTO CEOs - BLURRING THE SPIRITUAL LINE
about 11 years ago
What does this mean to you and me? In an ideal world, in which probably our parents lived, a spiritual guru was one who guided us onto the path of knowledge, wisdom and helped us find the purpose of life. His teachings were more about delving into oneself and cleansing one from all the "mayajaals" of life. He preached a life of detachment - it did not mean living away from the loved ones but learning to live a balanced life like a mountain on the shores
GANESHA AND GDP - THATS PRETTY MUCH THE AGENDA!
Households and street corners are getting ready to welcome the elephant God, marking the official ushering in of the festive season. The coming of Ganapati festival is the beginning of big time as this is followed by Navratri and then the biggie – Diwali. Marriage season begins soon after thus the coming of Ganesha brings in all-round festivity
HAPPINESS INDEX - INDIA SLIPS; WHERE ARE ACHCHE DIN?
There was a primary teacher in s school in India. He asked children to list down what they wanted to be when they grew up. Everyone listed out their dreams- astronaut, teacher, doctor, actor, singer, scientist. But one student wrote, "Happy". The teacher was struck by the profoundness of this small child
